Let's Take a Selfie

Updated: Jan 13

Selfies!  What is a selfie all about?  You or maybe a few people you can cram into the picture around you, right?  Usually a selfie is taken to commemorate some sort of occasion.

What if you took a selfie to assess the state of your physical condition?  How are you standing, walking, sitting or moving in general?  Let’s cram a few more people into the shot.  How are our spouses, friends, and kids moving, standing, sitting or walking?

I have had a number of patients with children that had fairly advanced scoliotic curvatures in their spine, and no one noticed.  Most of the time it would be an outsider to the family at the pool or beach that would say, “Hey, what’s up with that curve in your daughter’s back?” and then the lights would come on.  “Wow, yeah.  Look at that.  I never noticed.”

So, I’m asking you to take a selfie.  Take note of how you stand, sit and walk, and then look at your spouse, child, sibling, parent or friend.  Do you see uneven shoulders, head jutting forward from the shoulders, uneven gait when walking, slouching when sitting or a visible sideways curvature from the front or back?

Hey, Davey! How's that back pain?

Little Davey was 5 years old, riding his bike down the big hill in front of his house.  He looked and waved at his friends as he sped past them.  In doing so, he didn’t see the pothole in front of him
