BREATHE EASY WITH CHIROPRACTIC CARE

Everyone would like to be able to breathe a little easier, and that is particularly important for people suffering from asthma. This year and last year we were plagued by smoke coming down from Canada’s wildfires and this made things even worse. Now, we have fall-time allergies that complicate breathing problems until the first frost and more so after the first snowfall.
As a chiropractor, I don’t “treat” asthma, but I do treat the spine and unlock joints that lock up due to stress and trauma. The direct physical connection occurs with the lack of movement of the ribs that limits breathing action. There is also a neurological affect that occurs with locked joints. When a joint locks 3 trillion impulses are sent to the brain per second! Only 50 impulses spill over to the higher centers of the brain that gives us the perception of pain. The rest of the impulses “key up the body” causing muscle tension and spasm and constriction of the blood vessels as well as the tightening and narrowing of the airways in the lungs. A person’s system also becomes more excitable to other aggravating stimuli like cold air, allergens and physical exertion. A term called “reactive airways” is often used to describe this.
I’ll briefly describe three examples of how I was able to help patients breathe easier. The first involved a parent who questioned me for 4 years about his son’s asthma before he finally brought him in for care. He responded very well to care and one of the last times he reported having to use an inhaler was when he was visiting out West in higher altitudes. A second example involved two brothers ages 3 and 4 that were virtual prisoners in the winter due to their “reactive airways” with cold air. They could only sled down a hill one or two times before having to retreat indoors for inhaler and nebulizer treatments. The following winter after receiving care, they were able to take up snowboarding! The last example was an elderly woman who would always come in for care when she started having to use her inhaler again. Her airways would always open back up after an adjustment.
